Gezira Sporting Club
 6th October City, Egypt
HJA Design Studio has been contracted to prepare the master plan for the exclusive new Gezira Sports Club located in 6th October City, an emerging metropolitan area just 20 minutes outside of the city of Cairo. Based on similar program elements at the successful 100-year old Gezira Sports Club on Zamalek Island in Cairo, the new 50-acre recreational facility will house a members-only Social Building, Lido Building, Children's Area, Sports Hall, Tennis Center, and Water Sports Complex, as well as numerous sporting facilities and fields. Two major challenges in this project included the linear nature of the site - 950m X 250m - and the siting of the sports facilities on the north-south axis. The conceptual layout was resolved by creating three main arrival courts surrounded by the major uses on the site. A wide pedestrian walkway serves as a comfortable social connection between the arrival courts. Four meters beneath the complex, a two-lane service drive will accommodate service vehicles and employee traffic.

New Giza - Neighborhood One
 6th October City, Egypt
In the heart of Neighborhood One, the main boulevard splits along the edges of the residential units and creates a long triangular green space 800m x 80m at the center, tapering on both ends. The conceptual approach for the design of this park took its lead from geographical features of the Egyptian landscape.

A winding path runs through the park represents the flow of the River Nile that begins in Uganda, and culminates at the Mediterranean Sea. Towards the center of the park, the path embraces a large water feature with several terraces of cascading water depicting the flow of the Nile down the hills of Ethiopia. With the water terraces, water flows down the sides of pyramidal shaped cones into large main basins. The addition of canvas shade structures along the winding path make the pedestrian experience a pleasant one during the day.

Large grassy pyramidal shaped cones within the green spaces depict the pyramids strewn across the Egyptian landscape. The finishes of these pyramidal shaped cones vary from grass to smooth rose colored granite-faced stone; in two instances the pyramidal cones recede into the ground to create positive and negative balance. The jewel of Neighborhood One, this park design will provide respite from the busy traffic surroundings of this village project.

New Giza - Neighborhood Two
 6th October City, Egypt
Neighborhood Two is the first group of apartment buildings now under construction and will be the first Phase of a large mixed use community located on the Cairo Alexandria Road. Apartments surround an enclosure of spaces, each featuring a ā€œUā€ shaped area that affords great opportunities to design some very exciting green areas within each enclosure.

A strong walkway system binds these various enclosed spaces. Within each enclosed courtyard, the path culminates into a water feature before continuing on into the next enclosed courtyard, and finally concluding at a large lake to the north. The green spaces within the courtyards feature landscaped berms with collection spaces for play equipment. Large canvas shades and pergolas promote walking in the early hours of the morning and late afternoon. Street furniture like benches, trash receptacles, bicycle racks and landscape lighting enhance the ambience of the design.

The meeting point of two main paths gave rise to the opportunity of creating a large pedestrian plaza with a bosque of royal palms and a beautiful water feature that is the focal point of this plaza. Below level parking is provided for all the residential units.
